ANNOTATION ON PHOTO (back, handwritten): French/Swiss German: "Les 3 'Rübchli' A Biel-Benken. Juin 1937." English: "The 3 'little turnips' At Biel-Benken. June 1937." Note: "Rübchli" is Swiss German diminutive of "Rübe" (turnip) — an affectionate nickname for three children. Biel-Benken is a village in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, near Basel. The French/Swiss-German mix confirms a Basel-area family connection. The front shows three children.

Front shows an elderly man (Fritz Weiler) with a younger man or boy (Charles Fodor).
Front
ANNOTATION ON PHOTO (back, handwritten): "Charles Fodor + grandfather Fritz Weiler" IMPORTANT FAMILY CONNECTION: This photograph identifies Fritz Weiler (likely Friedrich Weiler), who is the patriarch of the "Carl and Mina Weiler papers" collection at the USHMM (accession 2004.485.1). "Carl" is likely an Americanization of "Karl" (Fritz's full name may have been Karl Friedrich Weiler, or Fritz may be his father/relative). Charles Fodor appears to be a grandchild of Fritz Weiler, possibly through a daughter who married someone named Fodor (a Hungarian surname). Description: Front shows an elderly man (Fritz Weiler) with a younger man or boy (Charles Fodor).

HISTORICAL NOTE: This photograph places three women — Ruth, Raymonde, and Annie — in Hove-Brighton, England, in the summer of 1939, just weeks before the outbreak of World War II (September 1939). This may document a visit or an escape from continental Europe to England. The French name "Raymonde" suggests connections to both English and French-speaking communities.
